This year’s John Lewis Celebration will offer a film screening of the newly produced film, The Modern Jazz Quartet: From Residency To Legacy, directed by George Schuller. The screening will be followed by a Q & A with Schuller. Formed in 1952, The Modern Jazz Quartet pushed the boundaries of jazz and classical music at a time when the genre, like the country itself, was in the throes of change. An epicenter of this evolution was The Music Inn, a musical oasis nestled in the Berkshire Mountains. Jazz and Film Critic, Gary Giddins says, “George Schuller’s valentine to the Modern Jazz Quartet is one of the most entertaining jazz films—make that music films—ever made, from its unexpectedly surreal opening to Percy Heath’s final remarks. The music is sublime, the talking heads (RIP) are charming, and the story is by turns dramatic, funny, and inspiring. A must see.” Free!
