The Bobcats, featuring Bob Gusch on woodwinds, Dan Dowling on guitar and vocals, and John Griffin on bass, team up to perform selections from their newly released CD, Music for the Sole, which recently won a 2019 New Mexico Music Awards nominee for best jazz CD. Named “Best Unsigned Blues Artist” in 1995 by the Nashville Music City Blues Society, Dan Dowling is a veteran jazz and blues musician performing in combos ranging in size from duo to big band. Bob Gusch, a mainstay of the Albuquerque music scene, has played with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, the Outpost Repertory Jazz Orchestra, and currently, with his Brazilian ensemble, Saudade. John Griffin, a long time acoustic and electric bassist with various jazz, blues, and rock groups has appeared with artists including Bo Diddley and Eddie Harris. Roger Shirley joins the group this evening on drums for an evening of Swing, jazz standards, bossa nova and originals. Austrian pianist, composer and Steinway artist, Markus Gottschlich, the current Executive Director of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, presents his “Melodies of Everyday” project in which he explores the transformation and elevation of everyday sounds into musical vignettes. Recorded with a binaural microphone around the world over a 2-year period, Gottschlich sampled some of the most familiar “noises” and utilized them as a springboard for his compositions, arranged for piano trio. The result is music that captivates the audience and invites listeners to change their relationship to the world around them. Gottschlich has released two albums, including his 2008 debut, When the Day is Done, which received tremendous critical acclaim and his follow up, Of Places Between (2013) for which he teamed up with Grammy Award-winning musicians Federico Britos and Jose Javier Freire. He has performed at many prestigious jazz festivals and conducts clinics in the US, Europe and Asia. Joining him for this concert will be Artha Meadors on bass and Arnaldo Acosta on drums.
