Learn about the amazing black bears that we share our home with via educational booths as well as a photo booth, door prizes, scavenger hunts, face painting and more.

Mark your calendars for New Mexico's third annual Bear Festival! This event will happen on Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Los Alamos Nature Center. The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (the non-profit that operates the nature center) is once again hosting this event alongside the Land of Enchantment Wildlife Foundation.

Stop by to to learn more about the amazing black bears that we share our home with! Educational booths and activities will help people of all ages learn more about black bears and what we can do to make sure we both humans and bears stay safe.

Throughout the event, wildlife biologist Daryl Ratajczak will give bear safety demonstrations in the planetarim. Find out more about how black bears communicate and what to do if you ever encounter one in the wild. Visitors will also enjoy booths from the Sandia Mountain Bear Collaborative, Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico Game & Fish, Los Alamos County, the Sierra Club, and more to find out more about the latest research on black bears. Adults and kids can dress up and enjoy a bear-themed photo booth inside the nature center and take home a polaroid!

Attendees can enter to win a variety of door prizes! Stop by to enter to win prizes like a BearVault or stuffed black bear. REI has also donated a camping chair, backpacking chair, and two duffle bags for attendees to win!

Kids can learn about having a bear safe campfire, go on a scavenger hunt, get their faces painted, and more.

Plus, join PEEC and the LEWF the evening before Bear Festival for the Eat Like a Bear dinner! We'll have a buffet-style dinner entirely inspired by a black bear's diet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 6 PM. Learn about how bears acquire food in the wild and our own backyards at this fun, educational dinner. Find out more and get tickets here.
