Concert features organist from Savannah playing local historic organ
Paul Thornock, Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, Georgia, will perform a free concert This special organ recital is being co-sponsored by First Presbyterian Church and the Albuquerque Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. This is the first solo organ concert held at the Church since the Organ Jubilee series in 2016.
This will also be the first concert of the Guild of Organists season. “First Presbyterian and the Guild are working together to present a talented next-generation organist from out of state who will showcase the wonderful instrument we have here in Albuquerque,” said First Presbyterian Music Director James Yeager.
The program will feature works by J.S. Bach including the Prelude and Fugue in E minor. The “Symphonie pour Orgue,” Op. 5 by Augustin Barié, a French Romantic organist and composer, will also be performed. German composer Max Reger wrote three chorale fantasias in 1900, including Fantasie: Hallelujah! Gott zu loben,” which Thornock will be performing.
With the fire this spring at Notre Dame in Paris, Thornock’s planned concert for the spring of 2020 is now uncertain, but he hopes to be able to play there in the future as the Notre Dame organ was spared in the massive fire that made worldwide news.
