The play, loosely based on the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster, illuminates the hopes and dreams that fuel humanity's quest for the stars.

Defying Gravity, the opener of Mother Road's 12th season, is a beautifully impressionistic work by award-winning playwright and screenwriter, Jane Anderson (The Wife, Olive Kitteridge, Mad Men). The play, loosely based on the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster, illuminates the hopes and dreams that fuel humanity's quest for the stars.

Artfully folding space and time, it is able to parallel Claude Monet's artistic pursuits with the past of the Teacher, a character inspired by Christa McAuliffe, the first educator selected to be a civilian astronaut. The resulting journey is a wondrous transformation of a national tragedy.

Defining Tragedy

In January 1986 a school teacher named Christa McAuliffe boarded the space shuttle Challenger and died soon after in an explosion that took her life and the lives of six other crew members, as school children across the country watched in horror from their classrooms. National tragedies have sadly become commonplace, but it was a defining moment for a generation. Jane Anderson’s play, Defying Gravity, which loosely revolves around this event and the impact it had on the play’s characters and the nation, opens on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7:30pm at Mother Road Theatre Company (6320 Domingo Rd. NE). For more information and tickets to this all-ages event, see motherroad.org.
