Whether portraying the quiet beauty of New Mexico or memories of travels to ocean shores, this body of mosaic work by Laura Robbins recognizes the extraordinary in the commonplace.
Primarily created with glass and ceramics, found objects are sometimes integrated into the imagery. You may know her work from installations at the ABQ BioPark-Zoo and Botanic Gardens and The Range Cafes.
In the high desert, Laura’s home for over 40 years, humans, plants, animals and insects, microbes and molecules, the sky and mountains have been part of her community. Recently, her travels to ocean worlds have opened her senses to wondrous island and undersea communities.
“A Sense of Place’ is a celebration of places I feel a part of. Most pieces have elements of water imagery - our source of life. I believe that appreciating beauty and joy is a path to remembering and fostering connections. It’s a learning process – a practice we all need. Honoring and expanding our sense of place on our vast and small planet is a way of healing in these stressful times.”
On October 6th at 1 p.m., Laura will give a short talk and demonstration of her process. Following, there will be hands-on opportunity to learn how to begin one’s own mosaic.
Wild Hearts Gallery is an artists' collective, supported by 15 longtime local artists. Gallery hours are: Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
