An unfathomable convergence of heaviness featuring three distinctly maleficent techniques of sonic devastation on display. MONDO DRAG: Mondo Drag will knock your socks off, let your hair down and take you on a mind’s eye exploration you won’t soon forget. Though they exude love for the spiraling tapestry of heavy psychedelia of the past, they are on a rock and roll mission all their own: an unearthed prog band, futuristic in their time capsule, rocketing forward through the depths, gathering the sounds of space itself. ULTHAR: Ulthar create something uniquely arcane within the Bay Area metal underground. The trio comes together on their debut full length ‘Cosmovore’ to unleash a feral urgency for dizzying Absu like Black Metal with a Death Metal band’s bludgeoning violence. Thematically heavy on weird, supernatural horror and a bizarre Rudimentary Peni surrealism, Ulthar are a difficult to classify spectral entity within the sphere of Black Metal. Over the course of Cosmovore’s 40 minute run time speeds careen forward at primarily unrelenting velocity, the opening title track instantly battering with primal persistence. The album’s middle section, a blinding storm of ghastly black dread, leads into the 13+ minute epic ‘Dunwich Whore’ where the Ulthar universe becomes all consuming with proggy synth bookends, vertiginous tempo variation, grinding technical violence, and thrashed madness. Yet another stellar debut album released under the 20 Buck Spin banner, Ulthar’s ‘Cosmovore’ stands as the monstrous opening salvo of a band only beginning to wage war. ORYX: Formed in 2014, Denver’s blackened sludge trio ORYX originated with Tommy and Abbey Davis, and the recent addition of bassist, Eric Dodgion. ORYX floods the listener with a deluge of downtuned amplification, polluted quicksand, toxic garbage and broken hopes, bringing to mind the works of Eyehategod, Grief, Electric Wizard, Corrupted and Grime. In 2018 alone ORYX released full-length “Stolen Absolution” with support from Midnite Collective and Graven Earth Records and in October has just released their fourth effort with the “Born Into Madness” EP, delving into a darker and heavier realm.
