The winner of the NW Instrumentalist of the Year honors in the Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny plays live.

Winner of the “NW Instrumentalist of the Year” honors in the Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny was lauded by the International Review of Music as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation.” An honors graduate of the Berklee College of Music, he vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz flugelhorn master, Art Farmer, and has since garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following. He has released eleven CDs and tours extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Tonight, he features Phoenix-based vocalist Holly Pyle in a program highlighting the music of Burt Bacharach. The beloved songwriting team of Bacharach with lyricist Hal David, delivered hit after hit back in the day, including “Close to You,” “What the World Needs Now,” “Alfie,” and many others. At age 91, Bacharach remains active as a touring and recording artist, prominently featuring the flugelhorn as a solo instrument in his concerts and albums. Holly Pyle, who is celebrated for her “soulfully graceful, liquid-like voice” (Phoenix New Times), started out as an opera major before studying jazz and psychology at Northern Arizona University. She has become one of the most popular vocalists in the Phoenix area, performing with leading jazz groups, touring with the progressive soul-pop band, House of Stairs, and appearing regularly as a solo a-cappella act. Along with Matheny and Pyle, it’s Santa Fe’s own Bert Dalton, piano; Andy Zadrozny, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums.

Dmitri Matheny will also present a workshop entitled Music In The Digital Age, A Business and Career Management Workshop for Musicians, Saturday, October 26, at the New Mexico Jazz Workshop. Info at
