On tour in New Mexico this fall, Cedric Watson, who delighted audiences in Old Town at the 2014 New Mexico Jazz Festival, returns with his infectious Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music. One of the brightest young talents to emerge in Louisiana French music over the last decade, Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler, singer, accordionist and songwriter, who plays everything from forgotten Creole melodies and obscure Dennis McGee reels, to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs, as well as bluegrass fiddle and old string band tunes. Originally from San Felipe, TX, he made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston and two years later, moved to south Louisiana where he immersed himself in French music and language. Over the next several years, Watson performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups, including the Pine Leaf Boys, Corey Ledet, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams, as well as with his own group, Bijou Creole, who resurrect the ancient sounds of the French and Spanish contra dance and bourré alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa. His albums have been called “a tapestry of progressive and nostalgic.” Songlines London declared, “Fiddler Cedric Watson moves like a star and gets the girls screaming!” Bijou Creole comprises Desiree Champagne, frottoir; Chris Stafford, guitar/accordion; Philippe Billeaudeaux, bass; & drummer TBA.
