Some define woodworking as craft. However, when function is no longer the primary objective, taking a back seat to form, it becomes art. For David Johnson, woodworking is all about creative expression. Nevertheless, it has been a long road for him. After fifteen years as an ER doctor, he suffered a stroke, which left his speech, reading and writing abilities severely impaired, so he retired from medicine. Because he retained his fine motor skills, he chose to try woodworking. That was in 1996.

Dr. Johnson is now an accomplished woodworker with a large following for his craft and is the featured artist at Wild Hearts Gallery with his exhibition running from October 29 thru December 1. The public is invited to the artists’ reception on Sunday, November 10th from 1- 4 pm.

“I am almost entirely self-taught and have developed a feel for grain, color and texture of the wood I am working with. In the wood shop, I don’t have to talk to anyone and I can just immerse myself in the art. The table saw and router are my canvas. My favorite part of making the pieces is the finishing; bringing out the grain and color of the wood and highlighting special features of each piece with turquoise and other finishes. I enjoy working with exotic woods, combining them in patterns of color and grain.”

A Feast of Art features two new table designs in exotic woods, along with David’s recognizable colorful cutting boards, trays, candle holders and much more. Each piece is unique and meant to be both functional and beautiful.

Light refreshments will be served. Wild Hearts Gallery is located in Placitas, at the Homestead Village, 221-B State Highway 165, 2 ½ miles from I-25.
