COLORADO & NEW MEXICO AWARD-WINNING SCI-FI AUTHORS TALK NOVEMBER 26 AT PAGE ONE - AT SPECIAL TIME: 5:30 PM
Connie Willis, the most decorated science-fiction author alive today, and Melinda Snodgrass, screenwriter/novelist of Santa Fe, return to Page One Books 5:30 pm Tuesday, November 26 (note the earlier start time), to talk about "Trunk Books - Abandoned Projects" as a starting point for a 50-minute-long free-flowing discussion. They also will discuss their latest written projects, and sign books.
Willis most recent effort was 2018's collection of previously published novellas, "Terra Incognita: Three Novellas," which is described as such: "Three classic sci-fi novellas in one volume, from a Hugo and Nebula award-winning author. In 'Terra Incognita,' Connie Willis explores themes of love and mortality while brilliantly illuminating the human condition through biting satire. The hard-to-find novellas (originally published as separate slim books) are 'Uncharted Territory,' 'Remake,' and 'D.A.'"
Snodgrass' latest effort was the third book in her "Imperials" space opera series - "The Hidden World," in which 14 years have passed since military officer Thracius 'Tracy' Belmanor "was framed for theft to cover up an imperial atrocity, and he has built a new life for himself. Living under an assumed name as the captain of a small trading vessel crewed primarily by aliens, he and his crew engage in both legal and illegal deals just under the radar of the Solar League authorities. At the other end of the social hierarchy, Princess Mercedes de Arango has her own problems--the major one being the lack of an heir. Meanwhile her philandering husband Boho Cullen has ably proved the problem isn't him. With rumors of a coup swirling around the throne, Mercedes makes the desperate decision to undertake a military campaign and gain her people's allegiance through a victory. But when things go badly wrong and her future lies in the hands of the man she betrayed, Tracy has a choice to make--can he ever forgive her?"
In Spring 2012, Willis was awarded the title of Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award is an award given by the SFWA to a living author for lifetime achievement in science fiction and/or fantasy. Officially, it is not a Nebula Award though it is awarded at the Nebula ceremony. It was originally known as the Grand Master Award, but in 2002 it was renamed in honor of the late Damon Knight, a founder of the SFWA.
In 2011, Willis' two-part novel "Blackout" and "All Clear" won the Nebula Award, the Hugo Award (at the World Science Fiction Convention) and the Locus Award. In all, she has received 11 Hugo Awards and seven Nebulas; and was inducted into the Science Fiction Museum and Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2009. Her most recent novel, "Crosstalk," was released in 2016. Willis lives in lives in Greeley, CO, with her husband Courtney Willis, a former professor of physics at the University of Northern Colorado. They have one daughter, Cordelia.
Snodgrass has been assistant editor on the "Wild Cards" mosaic superhero anthology series since its beginning in the 1980s, worked two years as story editor on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (and wrote the script for the popular episode "The Measure of a Man"), has written screenplays for several TV series, and is the author of "The Edge" science fiction series. As Phillipa Bornikova, she produced three novels in the award-winning "Linnet Ellery" urban fantasy trilogy (the final book, "Publish and Perish," was released April 2018). She splits her time between homes in Santa Fe and Los Angeles.
Page One Books is located at 5850 Eubank Blvd NE, Suite B-41, in Albuquerque's Mountain Run Shopping Center (southeast corner of Eubank and Juan Tabo).
