Leading Ladies

Taking the Lead

The discerning theatergoer may be able to distinguish between screwball comedy and farcé but the less sophisticated among us find Adobe Theater’s Leading Ladies, which opens Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:30pm, to be more of a romp. Ken Ludwig’s play directed by Lewis Hauser centers on two Shakespearean actors from England trying to bilk a dying Pennsylvania woman out of her fortune by crossdressing and pretending to be her nieces. Unexpected romance and full-on shenanigans ensue. Tickets for opening weekend are $15. (Clarke Condé)

The Adobe Theater Presents: Leading Ladies

By Ken Ludwig, directed by Lewis Hauser

In this farcical romp, Jack and Leo, two down-on-their-luck English Shakespearian actors, find themselves acting for pennies on the Moose Lodge circuit throughout Pennsylvania’s Amish Country. When they hear that a dying woman in York, PA wants to leave her fortune to two, long-lost English nephews, they come up with a plan to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. Hilarity ensues when they find out that the relatives aren’t actually nephews, but nieces and they are forced to disguise themselves as ladies to infiltrate the family.

Romantic entanglements and a comedy of errors commence as the two men struggle to convince family members of their authenticity at the same time as Leo finds himself falling head-over-high-heels in love with one of the dying lady’s other nieces.

The cast of Leading Ladies features some familiar faces to Adobe patrons who saw 2019’s production of Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood as well as other well-known actors from Albuquerque’s Community Theater scene.

The cast includes: Tim Crofton (Leo), Tom Hudgens (Jack), Ericka Zepeda (Meg), James Kitzmiller (Doc), Kenneth Bennington (Duncan), Crista Bell (Audrey), Ninette S. Mordaunt (Florence) and Daniel Anaya (Butch)
