A presentation by Cristin Heyns-Bousliman on why employers don't need to freak out about marijuana.
Join us after work for a presentation by Cristin Heyns-Bousliman on why employers don't need to freak out about marijuana. There has been a lot of talk and concern about how recreational use cannabis will very likely be passed in the near future here in New Mexico and that leaves a lot of employers concerned with how this will change their work sites. In construction, with safety being the first and primary priority every day, the possibility of an employee under the influence of any drug worrisome. Cristin will cover which laws apply, updates to the Compassionate Use Act, and various protections built into these laws and how they apply to employers. By the end of this presentation you should be able to say "dude, chill" the next time this comes up. This presentation is appropriate for anyone in a supervisory or managerial role. One CPE credit hour will be provided in the field of Business Law.
Three Learning Objectives:
1. We will cover which laws apply, including their historical context (Compassionate Use Act as well as the recreational bill that should be considered during this legislative session).
2. We will cover recent updates to the Compassionate Use Act that created anti-discrimination provisions for medical marijuana users in New Mexico.
3. We will cover the various protections built into the law and how they apply to employers (i.e. safety sensitive jobs, workplace impairment, federal funding, etc.)
