Wild Hearts Gallery invites the public to attend the opening reception for quilting fiber artist Judith Roderickon Saturday, March 14, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This quilting exhibition will be on display from March 3 thru March 29.

Visions of cranes have inspired Judith Roderick’s artwork for decades. These ancient, elegant winter visitors to our Rio Grande Valley are symbols of hope, peace, longevity and fidelity and have always been cause for her to celebrate with art making. This show depicts how she has done so in a variety of media.

This series “Variation on a Theme of Cranes”, illustrates Roderick’s love for the beauty and diversity of the Earth and her longing to do all that she can to preserve it. She has a great concern for the trajectory of life on our planet, so she creates … so we and those to come can remember.

Judith was a Painting and Design major at Carnegie Tech in the 1960’s and has been making art ever since. Although many media have called to her in this lifetime, her longest and most consistent love has been working with fiber. Her work is shown locally and in national and international juried shows.

“As a long-time silk painter, I create the cloth from which I make my quilts. I still love the spontaneity and flow of the colors, the brilliance with which the silk takes the dye. I love to depict Nature, the flora and fauna of the natural world. It is exciting to create the whole cloth images that capture my imagination. My quilts are figurative, complex and are often embellished with vintage buttons or shell and stone beads. I find the intricate, multi-layered and meditative quality of creating Art Quilts very satisfying.”

On Friday, March 20, from 5-6 pm Judith will give a full moon talk and poetry reading celebrating the Equinox and the Sandhill Cranes’ spring journey north.
