More events at Old San Ysidro Church

A family-friendly event where adults and children alike have permission to come out and play in mud. Sponsored by the Corrales Historical Society.

Volunteers have a wonderful time working together and sharing the experience of caring for this historic building. The Old Church was constructed of adobe in 1869. It is plastered inside and out with a mix of clay and straw, which protects the walls from erosion. However, even in New Mexico’s dry climate, this plaster needs to be replenished every year to replace what wind and rain have diminished.

On Mudding Day, piles of clay, sand and straw are shoveled into mixers and the resulting plaster is then troweled onto the walls. Tools will be supplied as will instruction in technique. All ages are welcome as there are projects suitable for young and old. Come for a few hours or all day. In exchange for a few hours of time, volunteers will be treated to a wonderful lunch prepared by the Corrales Historical Society Docents, including chili, sweet treats, and more.

Remember to wear sunscreen, clothes that can get dirty, and a hat!
