October is Disability Awareness Month. UNM’s Accessible Campus Communities Equals Student Success (A.C.C.E.S.S.), the University of New Mexico’s students with disabilities organization, is planning its fall “Disability Awareness Day” on Monday, October 28, 2013, from 10 am to 5 pm, inside and outside the SUB’s Atrium and North Upper Plaza on the UNM campus. The day’s theme will be Accessibility is for EVERYONE: Understanding "Ableism," Redefining Disability. Many UNM student organizations and community groups from Albuquerque will participate in. Participating groups include: the UNM’s Accessibility Resource Center (ARC), the Division of Equity and Inclusion (DEI), the Global Education Office (GEO), and various Albuquerque community groups, such as the NM Allies for Advocacy. On Friday, October 28th, AC.C.E.S.S. will focus on raising the campus community’s awareness—students, faculty, and staff alike—around accessibility, transportation and other issues facing New Mexicans with Disabilities. The day also aims to educate students with disabilities about available resources at UNM, as well as in the broader Albuquerque community. There will be information tables and a wheel chair basketball challenge with the Kings Wheel Chair Basketball Team. For more information, please contact accessunm@unm.edu or call 246-2231.
