Returning to Outpost after too many years absence, Fred Hersch is described as “one of the poet laureates of modern jazz piano, who has also proven to be one of the most durable and forward-moving of any artist, on any arts scene.” Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with significant achievements as a composer, bandleader, and theatrical conceptualist, as well as remaining an in-demand collaborator with other noted bandleaders and vocalists. He has released more than three-dozen recordings as a leader/co-leader and is the first artist in the 75-year history of New York’s legendary Village Vanguard to play week-long engagements as a solo pianist, some of which is documented on his Alone at the Vanguard (2011) which was nominated for two Grammy Awards (Best Jazz Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo). Alive at the Vanguard, a 2-CD set released in 2012 features his widely praised trio with bassist John Hébert and drummer Eric McPherson (performing with him tonight at Outpost). That CD is something of a declaration of Hersch’s coming back from a devastating, six-month long coma and follows on Hersch’s 2011 multi-media production entitled, My Coma Dreams. As the CD demonstrates, Fred Hersch is indeed, very much alive. As Fred Kaplan of Sterophile wrote, the “music is ALIVE: fire-breathing with adventure, dance, spirits of all sorts.” $25/$20 Members & Students
