One-day, 3.5-mile round-trip hike that explores a unique, hidden canyon. Fee includes box lunches, guide and transportation.

Hike will take us through a small canyon that exposes brilliantly colored rock layers at the boundary between the Rio Grande Rift and the Colorado Plateau. We then ascend 700 feet to an overlook of Copper Canyon, a broad, majestic canyon well off the tourist trail. Wonderful photography opportunities with superb geology await us. Field discussions will focus on the geologic wonders of Copper Canyon and the changing shape of the landscape in this region of northern New Mexico, as persistent geologic and erosional forces have sculpted the land over geologic time. This hike is considered moderate in difficulty , including some parts that are off trail on irregular topography. Participants should bring appropriate hiking attire, and cheesecake.
