Michael Richie and the Sierra Club have fought to preserve a little-known stretch of malpais west of Cuba, N.M., for years. Majestic cliffs, ancient junipers and hunks of petrified wood inhabit the landscape there. The preservation of this unusual region is part of a proposal before the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM hosts a public hearing on the Rio Puerco Resource Management Draft Plan in Albuquerque on Wednesday, Sept. 12. You can get ahold of a copy at bit.ly/BLMplan or at the Main Library (501 Copper NW). (Marisa Demarco)
