A one-man play featuring ABQ theatre favorite Hal Simons playing 35 characters.

"I Am My Own Wife," written by Tony, Pulitzer Prize, and Obie award-winning playwright, Doug Wright, opens Friday, July 11th at the Vortex Theater in Albuquerque. Wright won the Pulitzer for "I Am My Own Wife" in 2004. This production is a remount of the New Mexico premiere initially produced by the Vortex as part of their 30th anniversary season in 2006. The one-man play features Albuquerque theatre favorite Hal Simons playing thirty five characters and is directed by award-winning theatre artist Lou Clark. Vortex Board Members chose to remount this production due to the success of the 2006 venture with Simons and Clark. The play is a tour de-force one-man show that explores the extraordinary true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. An East Berlin transvestite and celebrated collector of Wilhelm II antiques, von Mahlsdorf successfully navigated the two most oppressive regimes of the twentieth century – the Nazis and the Communists. Charlotte did this while openly gay and defiantly in drag, and was distinguished with Germany’s Order of Merit after the Berlin Wall came down. But controversy hounded her final years in the form of accusations of complicity with the Stasi, and the facts behind Charlotte’s remarkable survival may never be known. Opening night gala follows Friday, July 11th performance. An Audience Talkback will be held Saturday, July 12th with Hal Simons and Lou Clark, after the performance.
