For the fourth year running, the National Hispanic Cultural Center hosts the South American Folk Fair. This day-long festival is expansive, filling the large courtyard of the massive facility. Over the course of the day (the fair runs from 2 to 7pm on Sunday, May 20), folkloric dances are demonstrated, as well as salsa. Traditional foods are served, and arts and crafts are vended. Children under the age of 12 join the fun for free, while adults are asked to pony up $16 for an all day vacation in South America. That’s a deal! Tickets are available at the door.

Everyone knows by now that the best way to get a new furry best friend is to adopt one from a local shelter or rescue. If you've been waiting for the perfect moment to adopt, this weekend is National Adoption Weekend. Four times a year, PetSmart Charities hosts these adoption events. Almost 30,000 pets nationally found forever homes during the past event in February. Your friendly neighborhood rescue Watermelon Mountain Ranch has many pets available for adoption Friday, May 18 to Sunday, May 20 at Petsmart by Cottonwood Mall. Stop by at noon on Friday or 10am Saturday and Sunday and let the stars align. Your best friend is out there, don't keep them waiting!

Goes without saying. Anywho, the biggest, baddest and most eloquently mountainous of countries within that sceptered isle known collectively as the United Kingdom has a festival here in Burque. It is so much fun: people put on kilts, listen to bagpipes, eat haggis, dance jigs and all that Scotch stuff. The Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival happens yearly; this year it's on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20 at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park. Held in conjunction with Armed Forces Day, this day of fun and frolic hosts authentic cultural activities like live musical performances (read: bagpipes), crafts, food and athletic arts (Irish hurling, Gaelic football, tug of war), too. It's a great look at how Celtic culture from seven different lineages continues to influence American popular culture, too. This is a rain or shine event. No pets please. Ticket prices begin at $7 for single day entry and a two day pass starts at $10. Gates open 9am daily. For more information go to
