The Macabre Matinee or a Late Night Fright
Image via PixabayJoe West and his company, Theater of Death, present this year's most unique and shocking stage performance, Invasion! Inspired by the Theater du Grand Guignol in late 19th century Paris, the theme for 2018 follows in its grand traditions of exposing the dark side of human behavior. The Grand Guignol entertained and horrified Parisians and international theatergoers from 1897 to 1962 in an abandoned Catholic convent, where they advertised having a “doctor on duty” to treat patrons that fainted or had heart problems during the shows. The Engine House Theater in Madrid cites an optimal setting for such a gruesome spectacle. This, the sixth year, provides a number of dates and times to cure your curiosities. For $20, buy a ticket and choose from 8pm performances on Oct. 26, 27, 31 and Nov. 1, 2 and 3. Maybe a macabre matinee is more your speed at 3pm on Oct. 27, 28, Nov. 3 and 4. This wonder of a production is best suited for an 18 and over audience. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)
The Engine House Theater (Madrid)Theater of Death: InvasionVissi d'arte!
Image courtesy of public domainOpera Southwest presents a new production of Giacomo Puccini's timeless tale of political intrigue, Tosca beginning on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2pm and continuing on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7:30pm, Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30pm, with a closing matinee on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2pm at The National Hispanic Cultural Center. The opera premiered in 1900 and marks a compositional transition toward modernism; dialogue and recitative has been replaced in favor through-composition, or a continuous musical stream. In fact Puccini's score is riddled with references to and influences from one of the movement's progenitors, Wagner. The use of leitmotifs directly tied to the the appearance of certain characters on stage is another interesting aspect of this musical tendency toward modernism. Though action of the opera amounts to a typical historical political melodrama complete with torture and murder, the rich orchestration and beautiful arias—some of the composer's most popular—make this work, the thrilling story of Floria Tosca and Mario Cavaradossi, a wonder to see and hear even after 120 years. Maestro Anthony Barrese conducts this Italian opera (subtitles provided) in three acts with one intermission; tickets range in price from $15 to $89. (August March)

Silk and Lights and Everything Nice
Image via PixabayA wealth of delightful and dazzling cultural events are cropping up for Burqueños this month, including the Dragon Lights Festival, formerly known as the Chinese Lantern Festival. And guess what! This year has all new, handcrafted lantern sculptures to marvel at. The artists from Zigong, China, have brought out their vast creativity to bring their exquisite culture to the renamed fest. Kicking off on Friday, Oct. 5 and running Tuesdays through Sundays until Dec. 2 at Expo New Mexico, see the wonders of the orient including demos in inner-bottle painting, traditional Chinese calligraphy and crystal engraving. If that's not enough, check out revolving performances in face changing, contortion and Chinese Yo-Yo as well as food choices for all in American munchies and Asian delicacies from Asian Home Cooking. The festival runs each night from 6 to 10pm and tickets range in cost from $0 to $18 with a separate charge for parking. This event is open to all ages. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

Dragon's House of HorrorImage via PixabayWelcome to your nightmare! If you're not a horror fan, the more than 1.25 mile horror house may not be the ideal evening stroll. But for others, the Guinness World Record holders of the world's longest indoor horror house is a terrifying and entertaining way to spend an evening. Dragon's House of Horrors comes back to Expo New Mexico for another chilling year. All ages are welcome to experience the thrills for $25, and add a suspenseful escape room adventure for just $5 more. Receive a text when your turn comes up so there's no waiting in line. With food vendors, booths to purchase wares and live entertainment, waiting for the text won't feel like waiting at all. The house opened its doors on Oct. 4 and runs Tuesday through Saturday until Oct. 26. After that it is open 7 days a week from Oct. 28 to Nov. 4 from 7pm to midnight. Bring extra cash for Expo parking fees. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)
