Play Like a Girl
Percussion-heavy, girl-centric supergroup Mala Maña gets audiences moving whenever they play. By virtue of her membership in this band, Alibi delivery driver Alyson Steinman gets nods wherever she drops off the current issue of Albuquerque's free weekly. A veteran musician in the Albuquerque worldbeat scene, every fifth or so time I speak to Alyson, someone else inevitably approaches her asking, “Aren't you in that girl group that plays drums?” Indisputably popular live, Mala Mana now officially offers a recording to accompany your drive to the CNM Westside campus, clean the house by, pull weeds with, dance or sing along to, whatever—and you are hereby invited to their CD release party at Bandito Hideout (2128 Central SE) on Saturday, Aug. 10. There will be dancing. A paltry three clams gets one into this all-ages event beginning at 8 p.m., so most budgets will be able to handle Mexican food and drink as well as some nifty band merch; for the ladies, Mala Maña panties are this season's must-have item. Talented Afropop musicians one and all, these girls play well together, and they do it with a Chicana sensibility that is muy Nuevo Mexico. (Geoffrey Plant)

Edgewood Gets Wild
Just reading the description of this event got me a little bit dizzy: a barbecue dinner from a real chuckwagon, a free-flight peregrine falcon demonstration, a performance by bluegrass band Holy Water and Whisky and a puppet show. That's one full-to-bursting line-up of activities for the whole family, and well worth a 20-minute drive on I-40 to see it. The best part is that if you miss out this time, you've still got every Saturday until the end of August to try again. Tickets: $25 for adults, $23 for seniors, $12 for kids 5-and-up (kids 5-and-under are free!) (Ty Bannerman)

Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

Baby, It's Bad Out There
Eighth Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag DriveIn the words of Dean Martin, “Baby, it's cold outside.” So lend a helping hand to the homeless folks in Burque by contributing to Astro-Zombies' 8th Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag Drive. Now through Saturday, Dec. 24, drop off new, adult-sized cold weather sleeping bags at the comic store to help local homeless people weather the winter cold. The bags will be distributed throughout the community on Christmas Eve. And for each bag you donate, you'll also be entered in a raffle to win awesome prizes from the likes of Masks Y Mas, Rude Boy Cookies, Archetype Dermigraphic Studio and more. After all, when told, “Baby, you'd freeze out there,” even Dean's lady asked him to lend her a coat. (Renée Chavez)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
