Oo-La-La!
Few people know that New York City outlawed the word “burlesque” in the 1930s, or so I’m told by Tonya Kay while discussing her next visit to New Mexico. I get the feeling that she enjoys that sexy, rebellious sensibility that burlesque shows still seem to inspire. Last year she performed at the Launchpad with local companies Burque Burlesque and Burlesque Noir, but this week, she takes the stage with her own LA-based group, The Lalas. They’re a burlesque troupe comprised of professional actors, dancers and performers, each of whom has her own impressive list of TV and film work. They not only perform solo striptease acts, but ensemble routines as well, combining comedy, acting and various specialty arts. “Society wants to enjoy the wit and romance of sensuality,” Tonya says, “not just the two-dimensional sex objects we are fed in magazines.” On Saturday night The Lalas will fill the San Felipe stage with eight very sensual ladies, promising to deliver a sexy night of world-class entertainment. A Crisp Run Through the Farm
Attention all 5k fiends and fanatics: Looking for something more organic than the Color Run or more local than the Dirty Dash? Check out Rio Grande Community Farm Fall Fest 5k. Beginning this Saturday at 8am, runners, rookie and veteran, will take off through Los Poblanos Open Space farm (1701 Montano NW), complete with beautiful views and wildlife sightings. The trail is almost entirely straight-ahead, and the venue describes it as “a very fast course that will encourage the novice and keep the quick on their toes.” A 1-mile kid's run, a corn labyrinth, food trucks and several opportunities for the family to learn about creatures and crops are included in the event. All participants also receive admission for a family of four to the RGCF Fall Festival on October 26, as well as a RGCF tote – and who couldn't use another tote bag? Tickets are $30 for adults, $10 for children. Proceeds go to Rio Grande Community Farm which provides produce for Albuquerque Public Schools, donates to shelters and maintains a wildlife habitat and a two acre community garden. To register go to riograndefarm.org. See you down on the farm! (Rebecca Gonzales)

Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

Baby, It's Bad Out There
Eighth Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag DriveIn the words of Dean Martin, “Baby, it's cold outside.” So lend a helping hand to the homeless folks in Burque by contributing to Astro-Zombies' 8th Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag Drive. Now through Saturday, Dec. 24, drop off new, adult-sized cold weather sleeping bags at the comic store to help local homeless people weather the winter cold. The bags will be distributed throughout the community on Christmas Eve. And for each bag you donate, you'll also be entered in a raffle to win awesome prizes from the likes of Masks Y Mas, Rude Boy Cookies, Archetype Dermigraphic Studio and more. After all, when told, “Baby, you'd freeze out there,” even Dean's lady asked him to lend her a coat. (Renée Chavez)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
