Turning Over a New Leaf
What's better than free concert tickets? Why, free tix and helping those less fortunate. Flyleaf takes the stage at Sunshine Theater (120 Central SW) on Saturday, Nov. 8, with new frontwoman Kristen May. Formerly of Vedera, May brings solid vocals, impressive breath work and delicious growling to Flyleaf's signature sound. The band tours in support of new album Between the Stars. Listen closely for new songs like lovers' anthem “Magnetic,” moshy number “Set Me on Fire” and wrenchingly nostalgic “City Kids.” And keep your ears tuned for some lovely lyrics in “Magnetic,” wherein May sings, “You seem to know when I need to feel you closer/ Pulling me places I've never been/ There is a light inside you that hypnotizes/ Where I am ending is where you begin.” This grungy alt-rock band teams up with 104.1 FM The Edge to help burqueños in need. Tickets are available at various locations around the Duke City, and you can exchange donations of canned goods to score a seat or purchase tickets the usual, ho-hum way for $15. Fans of all ages can prepare to daydream about or realize crowd surfing aspirations at 8pm. (Renee Chavez)

A True Peoples Gathering
When an event lists “Vendors! Vendors! Vendors!” on its flyer, you know that it means business. But that's not all the Albuquerque Peoples Festival has to offer. The fest happens Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9am to 8pm, and Sunday, Nov. 9, from 9am to 5pm at Balloon Fiesta Park (5500 Balloon Fiesta Pkwy.). The goal of this celebration isn't just for New Mexicans to show what they do best (be it comedy, music, food, etc.), but for New Mexicans to come together and celebrate the fact that we all live in a land without a setting sun, a true Land of Enchantment. And to put some money back into local businesses. Musicians like Cuarenta y Cinco, Samuel D and Blue Ventures will strut their stuff on the stage, while guests can partake in a pie-eating contest, laugh at the outlandish stylings of Xtreme Komedy and cook up some magic with matanza, chile and salsa competitions. Mind you, this is just the most minor of glimpses. You'll have to head there to see this extravaganza in all its glory. Regular tickets are $10, but you can get in for a fiver with three non-perishable food items. How's that for giving back? (Mark Lopez)

Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

Baby, It's Bad Out There
Eighth Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag DriveIn the words of Dean Martin, “Baby, it's cold outside.” So lend a helping hand to the homeless folks in Burque by contributing to Astro-Zombies' 8th Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag Drive. Now through Saturday, Dec. 24, drop off new, adult-sized cold weather sleeping bags at the comic store to help local homeless people weather the winter cold. The bags will be distributed throughout the community on Christmas Eve. And for each bag you donate, you'll also be entered in a raffle to win awesome prizes from the likes of Masks Y Mas, Rude Boy Cookies, Archetype Dermigraphic Studio and more. After all, when told, “Baby, you'd freeze out there,” even Dean's lady asked him to lend her a coat. (Renée Chavez)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
