What has 429 legs and slobbers all over? The 143 Chihuahuas and chi-mixes that are racing this Saturday, Aug. 20, starting at 8:45am and going till 5pm for the Running of the Chihuahuas at Balloon Fiesta Park. With over 10 races, inflatable jumpers, a beer garden, face painting, best costumed dog (any breed) and a dog and owner look-alike contest (any breed), this looks like the event of the year to me. Tickets are $10-$15 for general entry and to enter the contests. To put your tiny guard dog in the race costs $35. I can tell you one thing: All the animals here will win Cutest Dag Evar in my book. Big Head Todd and the MonstersSummer's lease does indeed have all too short a date, as this year's final iteration of Summerfest reminds us. Before the cloudy-cool days return Burqueños back to an ever-approaching winter, take time to enjoy the season and festival that goes with it. Westside Summerfest happens on Saturday, Aug. 20 on Ellison Drive between Alameda and Cottonwood. This year's lineup features a microbrew garden, an artisan market and special crafts workshop presented by Home Depot. While you're there, check out tuneful and heady jams by national headliners Big Head Todd and the Monsters plus local faves Double Plow, Treehouse Basement and Boris & The Salt Licks. The summery action begins at 5pm. (August March)

Centennial Celebration
The National Park Service turns 100 this year and Albuquerque is throwing a little party to kick off the second century of wildlife and open space preservation. Okay, so there might not be a birthday cake or balloons at this soiree but there will be a special presentation hosted by ranger Allison Martin. Join Martin at the Petroglyph National Monument on Saturday, Aug. 20, to learn about the history of the National Park Service and why parks are so important. The talk begins at 6:30pm and is totally free. (Monica Schmitt)

Youth Against Violence
We are witnesses to the erosion of the threadbare American moral fabric. Sorry. I calls 'em likes I sees 'em. Drugs and internet. That's the problem. Oh. And mixed martial arts (MMA). All those chiseled, dewy, hard bodies pressed against each other while ropy muscles tense at the point where force meets force. It's disgusting. And UFC 202: the Diaz vs. McGregor Rematch promises to shower onlookers with buckets of sex—I'm sorry, I meant, “violence.” I am so upset about this that I plan to march down to the Fox and Hound Sports Tavern at 4:30pm, buy a drink and watch the fight while I struggle to repress my … disdain. If I had the stamina, I'd rail on this a bit longer, but it seems to be getting uncomfortably warm in here. (Joshua Lee)

Bring an appetite to the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, Aug. 20, between 11am and 7pm and a little cash—its free to attend, but if you want to participate in the chile salsa taste-off its gonna cost you $5. Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

Baby, It's Bad Out There
In the words of Dean Martin, “Baby, it's cold outside.” So lend a helping hand to the homeless folks in Burque by contributing to Astro-Zombies' 8th Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag Drive. Now through Saturday, Dec. 24, drop off new, adult-sized cold weather sleeping bags at the comic store to help local homeless people weather the winter cold. The bags will be distributed throughout the community on Christmas Eve. And for each bag you donate, you'll also be entered in a raffle to win awesome prizes from the likes of Masks Y Mas, Rude Boy Cookies, Archetype Dermigraphic Studio and more. After all, when told, “Baby, you'd freeze out there,” even Dean's lady asked him to lend her a coat. (Renée Chavez)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
