(quiet) Night Out
What's better than unplugging from social media? A lot of things, honestly. For example, Low Spirits is hosting an Unplugged Night this coming Saturday, Aug. 27, where musicians who normally rely on electronics (whether that's a MIDI board or guitar) perform, well, unplugged. Local favorites Joel and Jeremy from SuperGiant, Adam Hooks from Russian Girlfriends, Rueben Krussick of WholeHearted and Lilah Rose will be performing. Doors open at 8pm and tickets will be sold for $5 at the door. See? You don't have to get crazy to enjoy less technology in life. (Megan Reneau)

Make it 'Til You Make It
If you don't know what a maker is, then you're probably going to be a human slave in the mineral mines after the robot apocalypse. The makers, on the other hand, will get to enjoy a cushy existence as zoo specimens for robot children to coo at. That's because makers are the wet nurses for the future. They use technology, open-source design and DIY living to build some of the coolest, most mind-blowing arts and crafts seen by man. This Saturday, Aug. 27, expose yourself to the future at the Albuquerque Mini Maker Faire starting at 10am, and see what makes this subculture so interesting. (Joshua Lee)

Black Culture and Black Futures
Starting this Thursday, Aug. 25, come out to the African American Performing Arts Center & Exhibition Hall for the first day of the New Mexico Black Expo. On Thursday there will be a “Build Your Resume” workshop from 8-10am, followed by a career fair (10am-2pm) featuring over 50 employers. On Friday, Aug. 26, at the Embassy Suites, Gene Grant hosts a panel discussion on the benefit of black-owned business on the New Mexico economy. On Saturday, Aug. 27, come to the Albuquerque Civic Plaza for a FREE cultural extravaganza from 3-9pm, featuring a hair battle (barbers and beauticians compete on a stage) and musical performances by The Walls Group and the Dazz Band. (Robin Babb)

There's just something about the sunflower. We're used to it, but if you step back for a minute, it looks like something from a 70's French sci-fi movie. Ever seen one of those really big ones, the size of your head? You're staring at it. It's staring at you. There's that unmistakable feeling that you're not alone. Spooky. These beautiful (and freaky) flowers have inspired human beings for countless centuries, which is probably why the good people of Mountainair host their annual Sunflower Festival, starting this Friday night at 5pm with a wine tasting (admission $10), art opening and music by the jazz trio, Blue Room. The festival continues on Saturday, Aug. 27 with arts and crafts, a sunflower hat contest, live music, food vendors, children's activities and juried art show, a free event welcoming all ages. City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

Baby, It's Bad Out There
In the words of Dean Martin, “Baby, it's cold outside.” So lend a helping hand to the homeless folks in Burque by contributing to Astro-Zombies' 8th Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag Drive. Now through Saturday, Dec. 24, drop off new, adult-sized cold weather sleeping bags at the comic store to help local homeless people weather the winter cold. The bags will be distributed throughout the community on Christmas Eve. And for each bag you donate, you'll also be entered in a raffle to win awesome prizes from the likes of Masks Y Mas, Rude Boy Cookies, Archetype Dermigraphic Studio and more. After all, when told, “Baby, you'd freeze out there,” even Dean's lady asked him to lend her a coat. (Renée Chavez)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
