Courtesy of the artist, via FacebookEvelyn Molina y Los Chicos del 512In a musical world filled with tribute and cover bands of all sorts—as well as a booming casino industry willing to host such simulacra—it was only a matter of time before legendary songstress Selena got the star treatment such verisimilitudes invoke and evoke among myth-craving, slot-machine-playing audiences. Enter Evelyn Molina y Los Chicos del 512, ostensibly the closest one can get in 2017 to a performance by the aforementioned Queen of Tejano music. Although Ms. Quintanilla-Pérez tragically passed away more than 20 years ago, her sound and style live on through Molina's project. Performing hits from the now mythic star's canon, including selections from Selena's 1992 breakthrough album Entre a Mi Mundo, Molina y Los Chicos are scheduled to perform at Isleta Resort and Casino on Saturday, Jan. 14, so prepare yourself for some Amor Prohibido. Tickets cost between $10-$20. (August March)

ELO, How Are You?
If you're like me, your dad was the one who got you listening to the Electric Light Orchestra, the '70s symphonic rock band from England. If you're like me, you were obsessed with ELO during middle school. If you're like me, you still have a special place in your heart for tunes like “Evil Woman” and “Livin' Thing.” And if you're like me, you want a $22 ticket to Strange Magic: The ELO Experience, a tribute concert at Legends Theater at Route 66 Casino on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 8pm. See ya there—I'll be the one playing the rock 'n' roll air-cello. (Renée Chavez)

We're All Mad Here
Given the madness of 2016, the year 2017 could be a very crazy 365 days indeed. The Vortex Theatre starts us off on the right foot, then, by sending us on an appropriately nonsensical trip down the rabbit hole with Alice in Wonderland. A cast of fourteen—including Angelina Ortiz, Bridget Dunne, Matthew Van Wettering, Christy Lopez, Katie Farmin and Aaron Worley—play multiple roles in this “rowdy, engaging” adaptation. The play times out at 90 minutes, which is a perfect length for families with children. The show runs Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 10am and 7pm, and Sundays at 2pm through January 29. Tickets are $10 for children under 12, $15 for students and $22 for adults. (Devin D. O'Leary)

The Albuquerque Comic Con has always been the best opportunity to rub elbows with lovers of comics, TV and film. The event draws fans from all over the state to mingle with fellow nerds and browse vendors selling comics and comic-adjacent paraphernalia. This year’s Comic Con brings in actors, writers and celebrities such as Kel Mitchell ("Kenan & Kel"), Bam Margera ("Jackass") and Shannon Purser ("Stranger Things"). The convention is Jan. 13-15, at the Albuquerque Convention Center, with several preview and after-hours events as well. Visit albuquerquecomiccon.com to see the full schedule and buy tickets for $5-$250. (Robin Babb)

Love and Light
Join fellow community members, New Mexico Dream Team, United We Dream, labor advocates and immigrants from across the state on Saturday, Jan. 14, and march in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program at the Immigrant Youth and Allies March. President Obama created DACA in 2012, to allow certain undocumented immigrants such as minors a renewable two-year period of deferred action and the eligibility of a work permit. President-elect Donald Trump now threatens to reverse this statute. Locals participating in this national march will be meeting at 10am on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and University then march to Civic Plaza. Protect the movement and your fellow Americans, and stand up for our rights. (Megan Reneau)

City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
