Go Like the River
Photo by Wes NamanSquash Blossom BoysThe Albuquerque Folk Festival has ebbed and flowed over the years, presumably in a fashion similar to the mythically winding rivers often rhapsodized about in American folklore, literature and music. The ascension of the late, great Gary Libman to the presidency of the festival's board of directors provided structure and growth that has practically guaranteed the source of all the good ol' music will never run dry. Still, given the economic realities in our great nation and the costs of producing such a successful regional music fest, a benefit concert is often in order, to keep things flowing, as it were. With that metaphor in mind, check out the concert featuring two of Burque's authentic Americana units, the Silver String Band and The Squash Blossom Boys when they perform on Friday, Jan. 27. A portion of the proceeds from this 21+ holy hootenanny beginning at 9pm will benefit the festival before its 2017 iteration comes around on June 3, 2017. Tickets are $5. (August March)

We're All Mad Here
Given the madness of 2016, the year 2017 could be a very crazy 365 days indeed. The Vortex Theatre starts us off on the right foot, then, by sending us on an appropriately nonsensical trip down the rabbit hole with Alice in Wonderland. A cast of fourteen—including Angelina Ortiz, Bridget Dunne, Matthew Van Wettering, Christy Lopez, Katie Farmin and Aaron Worley—play multiple roles in this “rowdy, engaging” adaptation. The play times out at 90 minutes, which is a perfect length for families with children. The show runs Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 10am and 7pm, and Sundays at 2pm through January 29. Tickets are $10 for children under 12, $15 for students and $22 for adults. (Devin D. O'Leary)

Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
