Make Your Own Rock 'n' Roll
Courtesy of the artistThe FlossiesThe poster for the concert happening at Moonlight Lounge on Friday, April 28, depicts a lonesome hogan placed in the midst of a black and white desolation. Flying out from a chimney on the traditional Diné dwelling is a plume of colorful smoke that names some of the bands that make that large sacred expanse to Burque’s west much more than a monochromatic desert. The smoky color of music pervades that realm, and now it’s drifting our way. With music by rez rebels Nizhóní Girls, The Flossies, Midnight Stew, Nite Kidz, Lilith and Burque’s own DIY punk powerhouse Litter Brain, this is going to be a concert guaranteed to give listeners a solid and soulfully sonic indication of how powerful the voices—and electric guitars and synths and drums—from our Native American neighbors and fellow punk rockers can be. The bands will be performing during this year’s Gathering of Nations Pow Wow to raise funds for the upcoming Asdzaa Warrior Fest. Join in on this rocking revelation for only $5 and a valid 21+ ID. Doors are at 8pm; the righteous ritual begins at 9pm. (August March)

Why is Pie?
Dan ParsonsCarl Sagan famously said, “If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” Ponder that for a minute. Keep pondering—there's a lot to unpack in that one sentence. Now toss in demigods, alter-egos and the meaning of life. Okay, now write a whole play about the questions and ideas that arise from that exciting mixture of things. Oh, wait! Someone already did that so you don't have to. Wade through your physical perception of the universe toward the Adobe Rose Theatre in Santa Fe Thursdays-Sundays to see Theater Grottesco's performance of PIE. Regular tickets range from $12-$25, but Thursday performances are pay-what-you-wish and April 14 is a special $100 per person gala. Regular showings are at 7pm Thursday-Saturday and 2pm on Sunday. Don't Cry For Her, Albuquerque
via PixabayEva Perón was a badass and First Lady of Argentina from 1946-1952 who championed labor rights, women's suffrage and the working class. And then Madonna played her in the movie version. Eva, affectionately known as Evita, is still adored by the people of Argentina. Growing up in the poor working class provided Perón with first-hand experience of the hardships the lower class faced. She was able to take her personal history and use it to help campaign for them later in her career. See the rest of her story at Musical Theatre Southwest's production of Evita running April 7-30, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $20-$22. (Taylor Grabowsky)

Earnestly Yours
You won't need an alibi (well, obviously you'll need this Alibi for all the info) to get away from it all at The Vortex Theatre this Friday, April 21. See The Importance of Being Earnest, a scandalous play making fun of Victorian moral values like social codes, courting (i.e. sexual restraint) and elitism. Follow Jack Worthing—a man leading a double life—as he leaves his alternate identity to find love. In this scandalous tale, while being pursued by his ward, Jack proclaims his love for another woman as his alter-ego, Ernest. To marry the woman, Jack must reveal his true identity to his friend—and cousin of his beloved—Algernon Moncrieff. While telling Algernon about his “real” life, Algernon's interest is piqued at the description of Jack's ward. The play follows the men awkwardly navigating romance, truth and friendship. See the play Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm until May 14. (Megan Reneau)

I've killed every plant I've owned. I'm known around the nurseries as "el Verde Muerte." Leaves shake when I walk in. So, yeah, I spend a ton on new plants to feed my ever-growing need for fresh victims. I just killed an azalea last week, so it's serendipitous that the Council of Albuquerque Garden Clubs is hosting its Annual Spring Plant Sale this Friday, April 28, from 1-6pm, and Saturday, April 29, from 9am-noon. The sale is happening at the Albuquerque Garden Center: Hopefully someone there will stop me. Why won't anyone stop me? (Joshua Lee)

City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
