Earnestly Yours
You won't need an alibi (well, obviously you'll need this Alibi for all the info) to get away from it all at The Vortex Theatre this Friday, April 21. See The Importance of Being Earnest, a scandalous play making fun of Victorian moral values like social codes, courting (i.e. sexual restraint) and elitism. Follow Jack Worthing—a man leading a double life—as he leaves his alternate identity to find love. In this scandalous tale, while being pursued by his ward, Jack proclaims his love for another woman as his alter-ego, Ernest. To marry the woman, Jack must reveal his true identity to his friend—and cousin of his beloved—Algernon Moncrieff. While telling Algernon about his “real” life, Algernon's interest is piqued at the description of Jack's ward. The play follows the men awkwardly navigating romance, truth and friendship. See the play Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm until May 14. (Megan Reneau)

Dance the Day Away
Chris HarrisCynical BirdLocal music—and the pervasive community of creatives that form the sub-culture's center—is so important in defining our civic heritage that even local government types are keen on recognizing and affirming the power of homegrown sounds. That attitude will be in full effect on Saturday, May 13, when the City of Albuquerque presents a Local Band Showcase at Civic Plaza from noon to 5pm. This event—which also features local food trucks and brewers—aims to celebrate our burg's bright and brilliant musicos with a day dedicated to new and nascent bands. They'll be two stages filled to the brim with heady sounds. Featured performers include The Curious Few, The Tularosa Basin Musicians Union, Cynical Bird, Mountainhead, and Michael Moxey and the Easy Sinners, among many other notable and totally listenable ensembles and individuals. Check it out, pick a new favorite and even bang your head, if so inclined. It's free, and it will be fun, after all. (August March)
