Taking Back Saturday
via PixabayIf you love twinkly guitar jams and screaming infidelities this so-called “sadderday” Mezcal Tequileria has just the thing to indulge your springtime sadness: Emo Night. Yes. From 9pm on DJs Gonzo Supreme and Takah are going to play everything from Cap'n Jazz to Bright Eyes to Saves the Day. Swoop your bangs and put $5 in the pocket of your skinny jeans if you plan on showing up after 10:30pm, before then it's totally free. And take note, while you may have listened to this music when you were 13, this event is 21+. (Maggie Grimason)

Earnestly Yours
You won't need an alibi (well, obviously you'll need this Alibi for all the info) to get away from it all at The Vortex Theatre this Friday, April 21. See The Importance of Being Earnest, a scandalous play making fun of Victorian moral values like social codes, courting (i.e. sexual restraint) and elitism. Follow Jack Worthing—a man leading a double life—as he leaves his alternate identity to find love. In this scandalous tale, while being pursued by his ward, Jack proclaims his love for another woman as his alter-ego, Ernest. To marry the woman, Jack must reveal his true identity to his friend—and cousin of his beloved—Algernon Moncrieff. While telling Algernon about his “real” life, Algernon's interest is piqued at the description of Jack's ward. The play follows the men awkwardly navigating romance, truth and friendship. See the play Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm until May 14. (Megan Reneau)

Chris HarrisCynical BirdLocal music—and the pervasive community of creatives that form the sub-culture's center—is so important in defining our civic heritage that even local government types are keen on recognizing and affirming the power of homegrown sounds. That attitude will be in full effect on Saturday, May 13, when the City of Albuquerque presents a Local Band Showcase at Civic Plaza from noon to 5pm. This event—which also features local food trucks and brewers—aims to celebrate our burg's bright and brilliant musicos with a day dedicated to new and nascent bands. They'll be two stages filled to the brim with heady sounds. Featured performers include The Curious Few, The Tularosa Basin Musicians Union, Cynical Bird, Mountainhead, and Michael Moxey and the Easy Sinners, among many other notable and totally listenable ensembles and individuals. Check it out, pick a new favorite and even bang your head, if so inclined. It's free, and it will be fun, after all. (August March)

Youth of the Nation
The New Mexico Office of African American Affairs and Warehouse 508 have come together to teach kids that being an artist can be a viable way to live through a series of five workshops called Youth Engagement. Beginning this Saturday, April 15, kids from 11-20 can learn how to identify skills attained through hobbies that can be used for income. A lot of artistic hobbies are often regarded as “just for fun” when the skills learned can be used in many careers like therapy, marketing, graphic and interior design, just to name a few. The workshops cover hip-hop dance, financial literacy, poetry, t-shirt printing and social justice art. The dates following this Saturday's event are April 22, May 13 and May 20. These free workshops require a reservation—call Shaina Saint-Lôt at (505) 383-6215 or email her at shaina.saintlot@state.nm.us to put yourself or your child's name on the list, only 40 kids can join each workshop date—which lasts from 10am to 3pm. Recipe For People Soup
via WikicommonsTake Truth or Consequences' hot springs flowing at 3.5 cubic feet per second—heated to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit; throw in 38 trace elements; add a keynote lecture on treating inflammation; stir in some live music, art shows and alternative health workshops; add people of all ages, at no charge; let simmer between Friday and Sunday, May 12-14, in beautiful T or C, making sure to stir often. Never ask yourselves who would want to make people soup. (It's aliens, probably!)

City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
