Though it may not fill the pages of most textbooks, the name Mary McLeod Bethune will ring through the halls of history as “The First Lady of the Struggle,” a civil rights activist of immense importance through her commitment to the achievement of African Americans. With this influence realized both through her position as a national adviser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and as a founder of the National Council of Negro Women, as well as in countless other ways, it is only fair and fitting that we honor her birthday and life in the same strain of faith and hope that she ignited in the world around her. This Monday, July 10, the NCNW is offering us all that opportunity for celebration and triumph as they host the world-renowned gospel singer Melvin Williams at the State Bar of New Mexico auditorium for a performance saluting the remarkable achievements of a truly outstanding, indomitable woman, a visionary who served as a catalyst for change and hope in the world. Whether you are an ardent fan of the 7-time Grammy-nominated Melvin Williams, or simply wish to pay a rejoicing tribute to one of our nation’s finest leaders, the $40 ticket is sure to be repaid in spiritual well-being.
