Black Thursday
Black Sabbath cover bands are quite fashionable—and profitable, if one is keen to the success witnessed by fast-food, heavy-metal brawlers Mac Sabbath—and there's a bevy of new kids on the executioner's block, so to speak. Black Sabbitch, an all-female outfit outta hell itself are performing their wicked and wanton oeuvre right here in Dirt City on Thursday, Sept. 7. Comprised of drummer Angie Scarpa, guitarist Blare N, Bitch, bassist Melanie Makaiwi and vocalist Aimee Echo, this quartet got the attention of LA Weekly who proclaimed the band nailed “every note of the legendary group's familiar repertoire.” So what are you waiting for; truck down to the Launchpad and rock out with these princesses of the night for only $8. I'm Broken, a Pantera tribute band and Sons of Icarus open. (August March)

Paintings + Pints
Billed as “a beautifully strange evening of dance 'n' brews,” Tractor Brewing (the Wells Park Chapter) is hosting a not-to-be-missed evening of yes, dance and “brews,” but in this month's version—which is going down on Thursday, Sept. 7, evening—belly dancers are dressed as renowned artists and their paintings, too. Their event listing showcases a picture of Salvador Dalí in all his strange wonder and crazy-eyed glory—so hopes are high for belly dancing surrealists and more. (My fingers are crossed for a dancing Klimt or maybe Munch's “The Scream?”) All will be revealed over the requisite beers when Hops and Dreams: Art Edition kicks off at 7pm. This event is free, but art lovers must be 21+ to attend. (Maggie Grimason)

Festive Phenomena
Courtesy of USC Press RoomDr. Josh KunMusicology is thing where humans study and report on the wide-ranging perceptual phenomenon embodied by music, exploring its various cultural and personal significance because such activities lead to a better understanding of just why a particular form of hairless ape dwelling on the planet Earth makes the sounds that they do. UNM does a great job of this by the way—they've always had lofty musicologists, everyone from Dean Donald Robb to Fine Arts Library recordist Adrian Trevino has contributed to the discipline. The tradition continues on Thursday, Sept. 7, when Dr. Josh Kun, who's visiting from Califas—presents a lecture as part of the UNM Musicology Colloquium at Keller Hall. The good doctor discusses the role of Latin American Music Histories as they relate to jazz, funk and popular music in 20th century El Lay—things that everyone who is interested in music should probably know about. The Tide Was Always High is free and begins at 2pm. (August March)

Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
