We've Got the Blues
Courtesy of the artistFelix y Los GatosIn the before time, the New Mexico Jazz Workshop—a notable organization devoted to promoting American music made by regional jazzers and bearers of blue-notes—produced a yearly blues festival in Madrid, New Mexico. This year, on Saturday, Oct. 7, to be exact, there's a new name and venue for the historic event. The Land of Enchantment Blues Festival happens in downtown Bernalillo this year, at Loretto Park. There's be plenty of good food, cool brews, wonderful wines and an arts and crafts area at this year's festival. But the main attraction will no doubt be the bands playing that day. They include local legends like The Memphis P-Tails, Felix y Los Gatos and Hillary Smith, among other true-to-life purveyors of our nation's rockingly melancholy musical treasure. $15 to $20 gets you into this fecund fall festival, which begins at noon and continues until 6:30pm. Temporal Length of an Event or Entity's Existence, for Your Listening Pleasure
What is a season? What's a day? An interval of time, notable by a leading change in the senses whether that's temperature, noise, sight or otherwise? ... Sure it is—and then some—but for what I'm talking about we'll be a little less analytical and just go with the literal sonic flow of the beginning of the 31st season of the Choral Artists of the Southwest's first performance of Quintessence: Tempus Fugit at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church with the theme of “the passage of time.” Visitors can enjoy music from Benjamin Britten, Johannes Brahms, Stephen Chatman, Paul Hindemith and more from 7:30 to 9pm on Friday, Oct. 6, for $10 to $20. Big, Fat, Greek Festival
From ancient art, myth and the birth of democracy, to contemporary food and crafts, to folk dance and music—Greek culture is certainly something to be celebrated. Thank the gods we have an opportunity to celebrate the fullness of the place at the Albuquerque Grecian Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, near the heart of Downtown. This three-day festival (that is, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 to 8) boasts live music (on the traditional small, stringed bouzóuki, no less), food, dancing, art and last—but definitely not least—pastries. For the small entrance fee of $2 to $5, that's a whole lot of value—this odyssey of fun sets sail from High St. at 11am each day, and concludes at 10pm Friday and Saturday, and 5pm on Sunday. Ain't A-Feared
There's plenty of reasons to be afraid these days. At least that's what the TV always tells me. The South Valley Public Library has found a good use for all those fears: using them to create El Kookooee! Schoolchildren are invited to the library this Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10:30am to enter their own version of El Kookooee in the El Kookooee Craft Time contest. Art materials are on hand for kids to design and build their entries, and the winner will be built at the annual South Valley community event and burned as the symbolic burning away of the fears. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. (Joshua Lee)

Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
