The Slam Lives!
Beat Poets / Public domainIf you're one of those folks that thought slam poetry has gone the way of say, the golden age of MTV (video killed the radio star, as it were) then you should totally be ashamed of yourself. The heady and head-strong art form is alive and well, it turns out, and it's headed for another glorious iteration right here in Dirt City. That's because on Saturday, Dec. 9, Outpost Performance Space is hosting the Albuquerque Women of the World Poetry Slam Championship. ABQSlams brings together 10 of Burque's best women slam poets for a killer engagement in cadence and soliloquy. The winner of this grand competition will represent our humble burg at the International Women of the World Poetry Slam to be held March 14-17, 2018 in the epicenter of all hipness, which is a place called Dallas, Texas. Admission to this illuminating evening of rhyme and reason is $15 for students and $20 for the general, poetry-loving public. (August March)

Love and Murder for Dummies
A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder tells the story of, you guessed it: love and murder. Set in the early 20th century, Monty Navarro suddenly finds himself in line to be Earl of Highhurst. Monty then must navigate love interests and how to quickly make his way up the line of inheritance in this musical comedy by Steven Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman. Gentleman's Guide won the Tony for Best Musical in 2014, and you can see it this weekend only at Popejoy Hall starting Thursday, Dec. 7 through Sunday, Dec. 10. Tickets range from $35 to $80. (Taylor Grabowsky)

“From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical”
Some historical notes: During the late 19th century, the Brits made operas too, except instead of being ponderous like the Germans or romantic like the Italians, the operas from Old Blighty were funny. Consequently, the work of Gilbert and Sullivan often gets played out in the realm of musical theater, as opposed to the opera world that produces, say, Puccini or Strauss. Albuquerque has a tradition of community theater embracing musical theater of all sorts, from the Albuquerque Civic Light Opera Association to Musical Theater Southwest. Now a new player has the spotlight turned toward them. Landmark Musicals presents the high-lariously engaging Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance. The curtain rises on Saturday, Nov. 25 and the production runs weekends through Sunday, Dec. 3. Participants are practically guaranteed to leave this luxurious laugh-a-minute dramedy singing “Modern Major General” after the final curtain; failure to do so will result in a resounding shout of “bollocks!” from your hipster friends. Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
