Is This Thing On?
Image via PixabayThe greatest minds of Weekly Alibi met behind closed doors earlier this week to hash out a heated debate. After hours of flag-waving, name-calling and flagrant insubordination, the wet-eyed staff emerged with a consensus: This event is dubbed “stANNEd UP Comedy Showcase” because Anne Heche is definitely performing stand-up comedy. Real news. Join the comediANNE (come on, kids—this is so easy) for a night of odd premises featuring performances by Steven Michael Quezada (also real news), Fred Hawkes and a slew of local comedians and musicians at the El Rey Theater this Friday, Aug. 24, at 8pm. Tickets for the all-ages show start at $15. (Joshua Lee)

Baby, Hold on to Me
Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind has a long, storied history. Spearheaded by Chicago ensemble the Neo-Futurists, this unique performance-art-turned-theater-piece ran 50 weekends out of the year from 1988 to 2016. That’s a long time. In fact, it’s the longest running show the city of Chicago ever saw. TMLMTBGB, in shorthand, consists of 30 rapid-fire pieces performed over the span of just 60 minutes. The show is now having its Albuquerque re-birth thanks to Duke City Repertory Theatre. Premiering locally on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Tricklock Performance Lab and running just until Aug. 28, the show promises a one-of-a-kind experience every time. All shows begin at 8pm, except for the Sunday, Aug. 26 show, which begins at 4pm. A price tag of $15 brings you and the baby together. This show is recommended for audiences 15 and older. Hung Like a Seahorse
Courtesy of the artistWe couldn't have come up with a better title if we wanted to. Quinn Fontaine did the work for us, with his aptly titled book, Hung Like a Seahorse: A Real-Life Transgender Adventure of Tragedy, Comedy and Recovery. Quinn is a proud transgender male with a story to tell. His background in all things expressive (stand-up, sketch and improv comedy, installation work, found sculpture and writing) makes him the perfect candidate to take audiences on this entertaining adventure. This comedic “show-and-tell” one-man show hits the stage at Studio Center (formerly Warehouse 21 in Santa Fe) beginning on Thursday, Aug. 23 through Saturday, Aug. 25 at 7:30pm and a final showing on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 2pm. Ticket prices range from $15 to $25. This show promises to be raw, intelligent, hilarious and most of all, authentic. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
