Big Oud
Courtesy of the artistThis year, we've seen a lot of beautiful, culturally diverse music pass through this desert town. September is no exception. Keller Hall at UNM brings us the Arghavan Concert with musicians Mojgan Shajarian and the NuAeen Ensemble, performing Persian classical music for the first time in Albuquerque. The string-heavy melodies include the droning of the oud, light and meditative hand-drumming and ethereal vocals that take us on a journey through the hardships of forced emigration and the sentimental roots torn away, but never forgotten. Go on the odyssey of sounds unheard by most ears on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 7:30 to 9:30pm for a ticket price of $35. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

Hee-Haw!
The New Mexico State Fair—a huge annual showcase of the Land of Enchantment's culture, art, food, music, agricultural produce and livestock—begins on Thursday, Sept. 6 and continues through Sunday, Sept. 16. Besides the usual suspects (BBQ turkey legs, fry bread, fresh pies and a midway faster and more fun than just about anything else in town) this year's state fair offers attendees the opportunity to check out the PRCA rodeo or State Fair Parade whilst also getting tips on healthy rural lifestyles, viewing vintage automobiles, appreciating the state's veterans and getting up close and personal with bunnies and chicks. A number of notable musical performances are in the offing to, including sets by Collective Soul, Dustin Lynch and EDM sensations, DNCE. There's obviously something for everyone at the fair, which is open daily from 10am until 9pm and Friday and Saturday from 10am until 10pm. General admission to the fair is $10; seniors 65+ and children aged 6 to 11 pay only $7 to get into the biggest show in the state. See ya there, cowpokes! I-Pick, U-Pick, We All-Pick Chiles
Courtesy of Big Jim FarmsEvery New Mexican loves the smell of roasting chiles. We wait for it. It stops us in our tracks when we catch the whiff. Want to bathe yourself in it like we do? Big Jim Farms can make that wish come true. Saturdays and Sundays through September and October, including Sept. 8 and 9 from 9am to 5pm, savor the experience of picking your own green or red chiles with onsite roasting! These chiles are grown chemical-free by a third generation farmer and range from mild to extra hot. Prices are by basket size, which includes mini, small, medium, large and bushel, with the option to have your spoils roasted right in front of you for $5 more. There are also pre-picked fruits and vegetables for sale. Meet the farmer, see where the food is grown and get ready to load up on the New Mexican staple, while relishing in that intoxicating chile pheromone. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
