Wonderwall Music
Courtesy of the artistGeorgie one, the dude who played lead guitar for some ancient rock band called The Beatles, knew the above statement to be true. And millions of years later, even as humanity explores the cloud caves of Saturn, it's still apparent. The music made on the subcontinent, unbound from the melodic and rhythmic conventions of the West continues to be surprising and engaging for a wide variety of futuristic audiences. At 7:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the African American Performing Arts Center, vocalist Kaushiki Chakrborty peforms some of the work that has helped define her as one of the best Hindustani vocalists of her generation. According to those producing the concert, Chakrborty performs “the traditional modern genre of classical singing (khyals), as well as ‘semi-classical’ or ‘light classical’ style (thumris), her versatility has enabled her to be part of several projects outside the traditional space of Hindustani music. She also performs contemporary forms of Indian pop music. In addition to Charaborty, the ensemble playing features Kedar Naphade on harmonium, Ojas Adhiya on tabla and Meghodeepa Gangopadhyay on tanpura. Admission to this world of music costs between $20 and $25 and all-ages are welcome to a kind of music Harrison once described as a “wonderwall.” (August March)

Blues, More Blues and Then Some More Blues
The Land of Enchantment Blues Festival, cosponsored this year by usual suspects the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and new comers UltraHealth, happens on Saturday, Sept. 29 from noon to 6:30pm and Sunday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 6:30pm at Loretto Park in Bernalillo, N.M. This singular digression into the blues, once held up in Madrid, moved to the more arcadian location northwest of Burque and along the river a couple of years ago, where it has been successfully growing, spouting cyan, cobalt and Prussian blue vibes ever since. This year's two-day festival features performances by both local and national acts of renown, including John Németh, Mem Shannon, The Blues Revue Band, Billy D & the HooDoos, Joanna Conner, Hillary Smith's Chill House, The Plateros and, get this, a two hour New Mexico all-star blues jam! A two-day pass to this all-ages festival costs between $30 and $40; one day admission ranges from $15 to $20. Get blue and believe in the power, brothers and sisters; this fest is the most for folks with such groovy inclinations, dig? During several hours on the morning and afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 29 (to be precise, 10am to 2pm), all are welcome to help build trails, share ideas for the design of the visitor center and contribute their wisdom as to what kind of interpretation programs the Refuge should provide. I-Pick, U-Pick, We All-Pick Chiles
U-Pick Green Chiles and Farmers' MarketCourtesy of Big Jim FarmsEvery New Mexican loves the smell of roasting chiles. We wait for it. It stops us in our tracks when we catch the whiff. Want to bathe yourself in it like we do? Big Jim Farms can make that wish come true. Saturdays and Sundays through September and October, including Sept. 8 and 9 from 9am to 5pm, savor the experience of picking your own green or red chiles with onsite roasting! These chiles are grown chemical-free by a third generation farmer and range from mild to extra hot. Prices are by basket size, which includes mini, small, medium, large and bushel, with the option to have your spoils roasted right in front of you for $5 more. There are also pre-picked fruits and vegetables for sale. Meet the farmer, see where the food is grown and get ready to load up on the New Mexican staple, while relishing in that intoxicating chile pheromone. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

The Medicine in Marijuana Film ScreeningImage via PixabayThe biggest thorns in the paw of medical cannabis are the lack of research available on the subject and the vast amount of misinformation bandied about by both its friends and foes. Using a National Academy of Sciences report as a starting point, Ben Daitz and Ned Judge present The Medicine in Marijuana, a documentary that tells the stories of cannabis patients and practitioners. For one time only, meet the cast and crew in person at the Guild Cinema, this Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1pm for a showing of the film and Q&A. Tickets are $7 at the door. (Joshua Lee)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
