The Descent of Punk: This Age or That
Image courtesy of Epitaph RecordsNow, on the other hand—and as opposed to your parent's music which you claim to have no knowledge of whatsoever—you probably have heard of the Descendents. The quartet from the beautiful yet threatening beach is ripping it up at Sunshine Theater on Friday, Nov. 16 at 8pm. The band claims rights to a lineage of punk rock from the OC and surrounding area that pretty much branched off from hardcore units in the early '90s to produce a more pop-flavored, personally emotional form of the genre. Their brand of music heavily influenced monstrosities like Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182 as well as perhaps birthing the ultimate in abysmal entities, a thing we'll call emo for the sake of convenience. But before they did profound damage to millions of Californios and as-of-then unborn potential rockers, they did produce some pretty epic songs. Besides that, their front man, Milo Auckerman and his compadres, Bill Stevenson, Karl Alvarez and Stephen Egerton are probably responsible for thousands of totally sick skateboarding injuries over the years due to turned out tuneage like “Myage,” “I'm Not a Loser,” “Cameage,” “Uranus” and my all time favorite, “Clean Sheets.” Just 27 bones gets you in to this 13+ gig. Fuck it dude, life's a risk. (August March)

There Will Be Blood
Puritanical tropes are shed and Hester Prynne is reborn in Aux Dog Theatre's production of In the Blood, an updated retelling of the Hawthorne's classic. This play—penned by Pulitizer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks—introduces us to Hester La Negrita, and the underbelly of American life. Acted and directed by a cadre of local talent, this imaginative piece of theater creates new in-roads with modern audiences. It opened Nov. 16, and runs weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) through Dec. 16 with tickets at just $12. Find tickets online at auxdog.com. (Maggie Grimason)

Curiouser and Curiouser
Image via PixabayThe Keshet Center for the Arts has always been a community leader when it comes inclusiveness and innovation in the local and statewide dance scene. Artistic director Shira Greenburg retired the much loved Nutcracker on the Rocks in 2016 and is back with a new show and another year of storytelling through self-introspection with Alice, an Adventure of Wonder and Wondering. As with all of Keshet's heart-filled performances, the show features dancers both professional and community-based from ages 8 to 80 of all abilities. Loosely based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and loaded with the classic rock and jazz selections we've come to expect from the art sanctuary of Keshet, there are plenty of showings, including two sensory-friendly performances. Shows are Fridays, Nov. 9 and 16 at 7pm, Saturdays, Nov. 10 and 17 at 2pm and 7pm, Sundays, Nov. 11 and 18 at 2pm and 4:30pm, and a special performance on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7pm. Prices include children 5 and under for $12.50, student, senior and military tickets are $25 and general admission for $30. Celebrate the arts for another joyous year with Keshet. Riding the Big, Tin Goose
Image via PixabayThere's something so incredibly romantic about the dawn of commercial travel: the idea of riding a passenger train with tweed luggage, a hat box and formal dress or the notion of getting on one of the first commercial airplanes and being treated like royalty by well-dressed stewardesses. That dream comes alive at the Double Eagle II Airport with the ability to Fly the Ford Tri-Motor. Viewing the marvel of modern travel is absolutely free. However, this is a fundraiser for the EAA Chapter 179's aviation scholarship fund. So why not book a flight? Single tickets are $70 in advance, $75 for walk-ups and $50 for youth. Experience what was referred to upon its 1928 debut as the “Tin Goose” on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 2 to 5pm or Friday through Sunday, Nov. 16 to 18 from 9am to 5pm. In addition to rides on the first Transatlantic Air Transport, or TAT, learn the history of the airliner, see displays, pick up a book and have it signed and enjoy free lunch and refreshments from Susie Reimer. If this isn't the coolest fundraiser of the year, we don't know what is. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

Image via PixabayA wealth of delightful and dazzling cultural events are cropping up for Burqueños this month, including the Dragon Lights Festival, formerly known as the Chinese Lantern Festival. And guess what! This year has all new, handcrafted lantern sculptures to marvel at. The artists from Zigong, China, have brought out their vast creativity to bring their exquisite culture to the renamed fest. Kicking off on Friday, Oct. 5 and running Tuesdays through Sundays until Dec. 2 at Expo New Mexico, see the wonders of the orient including demos in inner-bottle painting, traditional Chinese calligraphy and crystal engraving. If that's not enough, check out revolving performances in face changing, contortion and Chinese Yo-Yo as well as food choices for all in American munchies and Asian delicacies from Asian Home Cooking. The festival runs each night from 6 to 10pm and tickets range in cost from $0 to $18 with a separate charge for parking. This event is open to all ages. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)
