It's Time for the Fair!
Image courtesy of Expo NMThis year's New Mexico State Fair at Expo New Mexico runs Sept. 5 through 15 and promises to be a fantastic, potentially epic encounter with our state's multi-tradition farm culture, the local arts community, livestock and horse fanciers, New Mexican food and cuisine from all over the world—from frybread and pizza to pie and smoked turkey legs—and amusement park-style carnival rides to boggle the mind and excite the body. The action also includes most excellent concerts at Tingley Coliseum, a veritable center of New Mexico tradition. The fair is fine for all ages, and runs 10am until 9pm Sunday through Thursday from 10am until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission for kids and seniors is only $7 and adults get into the big show for $10. (August March)

Up, Up and Away
Image via PixabayDid you know that it takes more than magic dust and good intentions to make a hot air balloon fly? We didn't, either. Apparently there's a ton of science and mechanical-type knowledge involved. And now you can learn all about it at Intro to Ballooning this Sunday, Sept. 8, at Balloon Fiesta Park. Take part in this free crew training and learn the basics of tending a hot air balloon in a hands-on setting. Participants leave with an understanding of balloon physics and the role of the chase crew. The seminar runs from 7am to 1:30pm. This course is meant for those planning to volunteer at this year's Balloon Fiesta. (Joshua Lee)

Edgy
City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)
