The rootinest, tootinest lutenist this side of the Pecos, Ronn MacFarlane, plays both kinds of countries’ music (Scottish and Irish) in addition to Renaissance hits and his own lute compositions at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7:30pm. Even if you’re feeling Baroque, you are going to want to rustle up 200 bits ($25) for an advanced ticket to this all-ages show by going to mcfarlane.brownpapertickets.com. (Clarke Condé)

John Fogerty founded Creedence Clearwater Revival with his late brother Tom, wrote some thoroughly memorable rock songs and then left the band acrimoniously—he wouldn't even perform with his bandmates when Creedence was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. We may never know exactly why, but that failure to maintain the revival doesn't mean that we should forget Fogerty's potent playing and plangent purposefulness. The guitarist's solo career has been as noteworthy as his work with Creedence and most humans can hum from “Centerfield” as well they remember tunes like “Born on the Bayou.” Just like his estranged counterparts—Stu Cook and “Cosmo” Clifford (who we interviewed last year)—he's still on the road, playing all the hits, ensemble and solo, as he goes. On Saturday, Sept. 14, the old hoodoo guru himself plays the Santa Fe Opera beginning at 7:30 pm as part of his My 50 Year Trip Tour. Attend this historic all-ages concert for between $70 and $307 (for a VIP package that includes a suave swag bag.) Why get stuck in Lodi when you can watch a bad moon rising instead? I thought so.
