The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast
Image courtesy of the Dean Martin estateIf you're like many Gen Xers, you may spend early Sunday mornings (between 3:15am and 4:20am) watching super highlarious comedy outings from the '70s—like the one mentioned in the above title—hoping to coax the ghost of your dead dad out of the teevee and into your little Downtown chante. I know it hasn't worked so far, but the experience reminds one how funny the roast format is. It works great with elected leaders and their cities, as well as celebrities, in case you wanna know. If you wanna know more, attend the Roast of Albuquerque on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Hiland Theater. The hijinks begin at 7:30pm and the focus of the flaming is upon our beloved city and mayor, the honorable Tim Keller. The host is OG Burque actor Miguel Martinez and comics such as Black Mike, Nicholas Starr, Evan Wrons, Hollyanne Byrd and Sarah Kennedy. Hm, what about Don Rickles and Orson Welles? Tickets for this all-ages cook-off of sorts range in price from free to $15, and if you don't go, I'm a-gonna send Ruth Buzzi and her hairnet after you. (August March)

Am I Getting a Case of "The Vapers?"
Image via PexelsKonnichiwa, Burqueños! It’s that time of the year again when we get to hype ourselves up over Aki Matsuri Japanese Fall Festival. On Sunday, Sept. 22, from 10am to 5pm, $5 gets you in to the awesome action at this all-ages event at Veterans' Memorial Park. Kids 12 and under get in for free. With all the cool vendors, there's no shortage of food, dance, celebration, shopping and more, all in one convenient place. The highlight of the festival this year is the ramen-eating contest, where you and a bunch more presumably hungry college students go head to head in an all-out ramen-slurpin’ brawl. For four minutes power through as many ramen cups as possible for the chance to win a $25 gift card to Talin Market, where you'll undoubtedly spend it on the available gourmet ramen. Want more information? Visit nmjacl.org to learn all about this year's festival and to find tickets. (Dan Rayne Pennington)

City on the EdgeCity on the Edge is a breezy, smart podcast looking at the stories from Albuquerque history that have often been overlooked. Each episode takes a deep dive into a topic like the 1955 crash of TWA flight 260, Sandia Man or the 1918 quarantine. Worthwhile listening that will spur your curiosity about things you didn’t even know about in the city where you live. It’s free and available wherever you get your podcasts. (Clarke Condé)

2020 Bosque Chile FestivalLooking for a little chile? The 2020 Bosque Chile Festival, a celebration of food, art, and culture on the Rio Grande, is happening Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, with times waiting to be officially announced. But due to COVID-19 and the State of New Mexico public health order, the festival will be presented virtually! There will still be entertainment, art activities, a virtual artisan market, chile-chef demonstrations, educational workshops and more. This free, all-ages event is meant to give those stuck at home a chance to see what the state has to offer. If you are a high-quality chile-inspired and authentic New Mexican business with an e-commerce website and want to be a vendor, there is still time. Applications are being accepted until Wednesday, August 5. For more information email bosquechilefestival@bernco.gov.
