  • Where People Aren’t

A new installation by artist Nicola López, Haunted, opened  at the Albuquerque Museum, sort of. The large-scale exhibit of collaged, printed and hand-drawn elements that fills the main wall in the entryway to the museum ironically examines the Southwestern landscape haunted by the inescapable presence of humans. On display until at least May 2021, Haunted will hopefully greet visitors soon and assuredly will have a virtual component available on the museum’s website in the coming weeks. (Clarke Condé)

  • Dancing on, 2020-style

It is hard to beat the emotional power of a live flamenco performance, yet they have sadly been few and far between of late. But Old Town’s own Casa Flamenca has created an outdoor performance space with socially distanced seating where you can see live performances on hot summer nights. "Tablao al Aire" takes to the stage for a mix of live local performances and streamed works from Spain that promises to be a uniquely 2020 experience on Friday, Aug. 28, Saturday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 30 starting at 8:30pm. Tickets for the live performances are $35, or watch the stream from the comfort of wherever for $20. For more information and tickets to this all-ages event, see casaflamenca.org. (Clarke Condé)

Even the ’rona can’t stop chile season! Clear some space out of your freezer and head down to Big Jim Farms in Los Ranchos to take part in the fourth annual Green Chile U-PICK. From 9am to 5pm every day through Oct. 31, families can enjoy great views and weather at this safe and socially distanced activity. Pick your own green chiles—organically grown on a nine-acre farm—and have them roasted on site. This year Big Jim has also planted other fruits and veggies for U-PICK at his farm, too. There will be an open-air farm market with pre-picked fruits and veggies for sale. Chile-lovers of all ages are invited to attend this free gathering. Chile pricing starts at $1.50 per pound. • Burn, Baby, Burn

It’s not a good time to gather together in large groups. It is, however, an excellent time to incinerate our woes and worries. This combination makes this year’s 96th Annual Burning of Zozobra in Santa Fe something of an essential ritual. The 2020 event, like so many, has gone virtual, with the burning of Old Man Gloom being telecast live on KOAT-7 on Sept. 4 starting at 7pm. But AMP Concerts is helping build the community spirit with a COVID-safe Zozobra Watch Party at HIPICO, Santa Fe’s premiere equestrian facility. Viewers are invited to see all the action go down on two large HD video screens, drive-in-style. Cuarenta y Cinco and Severo y Grupo Fuego perform live on stage before the burning. Tickets are $49, $66, $88 and $110 per carload (up to six people per car). Early bird arrival and setup starts at 4:30pm. All cars must be in by 6:50pm. You must purchase tickets in advance at ampconcerts.org/event/363759/zozobra-watch-party. (Devin D. O’Leary)

  • Edible vs. Poisonous

It’s time to accept that it’s likely society will collapse after all. Maybe not immediately, but perhaps around the election. Are you ready for the Mad Max world we’ve all been promised? Better to be safe than sorry, so why not attend the Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Jemez Mountains: Seasonal Herb Walk, happening Saturday, Sept. 5 in the Jemez Mountains, just north of the Albuquerque Basin. Starting at 9am, this $50 class will teach everything a person needs to know about surviving alone in the untamed wilderness of New Mexico, including plant identification, ethical and legal harvesting methods, how to identify poisonous plants and hopefully some monsoon ’shrooms. This adults-only (for reasons of content and hiking distance) class is the perfect way to prepare for the downfall of man, so to get more information, visit the Blue Wind School of Botanical Studies on Facebook. • Do You Even Lift, Bro?

Hear us now, and believe us later. If you’re looking to turn that weak and jellied bag of flab you call a body into a rock-solid force of muscle mystery, then you have to drop those silly workout bands and pick up some real weights! This Saturday, Sep. 5, join the powerlifting Dream Team at Iron Soul Gym and learn the fundamentals of powerlifting. Expert trainers Cailer Woolam, Stacy Burr and Ed Coan will train you in the proper execution of squats, benchpresses and deadlifts. They just want to pump you up. The workshop runs from 10am to 4pm at the Iron Soul Gym, 2400 Menaul Blvd. Tickets cost $225 at bit.ly/34FAOYH. Lunch is provided. (Joshua Lee)

  • Wanted: Your Best Photographs

Shutterbugs gather up your best pieces and pick some to submit for hanging in the new Bernalillo County headquarters when the gov-peeps move to Alvarado Square, happening now until Monday, August 31. The selected photographs will be printed in a large scale and format. They will be used to create a welcoming environment for county customers, county employees and the general public. Some will be used on the windows of the new Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office suite. The photographs should represent the history and character of Bernalillo County and its people, places, landscapes and unique events in our county. There are some big bucks involved as chosen photographers will receive $1,500, with a limit of one photograph per artist. The chosen photos will become part of the public art program’s permanent collection. There is no fee or age limit required to submit. For more information, visit bernco.gov/community-services/current-call-for-entries.aspx. Ends August 31. (Carolyn Carlson)
