SUMMARY:Annular Eclipse Museum Events
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday October 11 @ 1pm\nWhat? There is weather in space?\nBy Dr. Douglas Biesecker\, Space Weather Scientist\, NOAA (retired) \nStorms from the Sun\, such as solar flares and radiation storms cause impacts on Earth we call space weather and create risks to the electric power grid\, aviation\, GPS users\, and many other industries. NOAA operates a forecast center 24×7 to monitor the Sun\, forecast these storms \nThursday\, October 12 @ 1pm\nEclipses\, the Heliosphere\, and the PUNCH mission\nBy Dr. Craig DeForest\, Program Director for Solar Astrophysics\, Southwest Research Institute\, and Principal Investigator of NASA’s PUNCH mission. \nWe care about solar eclipses because they let us view the Sun’s corona — our star’s ultra-hot atmosphere. PUNCH is a NASA Small Explorer mission that will help us view not only the corona but the material sweeping across our solar system and over the Earth\, learning more about the environment we live in — the extreme outer reaches of a star’s atmosphere. \nFriday\, October 13 @ 1pm\nEclipses during the past 5 decades.\nBy Dr. David Hurd\, Professor of Astronomy and Meteorology\nPennsylvania Western University at Edinboro \nThis talk will highlight eclipses in the contiguous United States during the last 5 decades and will emphasize why the last decade has been particularly rich with scientific advances and in our understanding of the sun. \nEclipse! October 14\, 9am to 2pm\nThen join us on October 14 to view the annular eclipse safely and enjoy activities\, live feeds from NASA and NOAA\, special guests\, handouts\,free continuous planetarium show\, and much more. All with regular museum admission. Pre-day online admission is encouraged. Go to\nhttps://my.nmculture.org/23489/26726

October 9-13\nEvery day from noon to 3pm.\nGear up for the big day with “Solar Family Afternoons” at the Museum.\nHands-on activities\, eclipse planetarium show\, solar viewing\, and a special short talk by a special guest NASA solar expert. There will be a different guest speaker each day who will speak on his or her solar research or other topics such as the ancestral record of sunwatching in Chaco Canyon\, and provide information about the sun and upcoming eclipse.\nAll activities\, including the short talk\, are free with museum or planetarium admission. \nSaturday\, October 14.\n9am to 2pm. View the annular eclipse from the Museum grounds and come inside to view the event through monitors linked to our own observatory and to NASA live feeds from around the country. Participate in hands-on activities about the Sun and the NASA missions that are intended to study the Sun.\nWalk on the Moon with our one-of-a-kind lunar floor map and talk with experts from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter mission. (The Sun AND the Moon are both part of the eclipse story!)\nEnjoy a continual planetarium presentation about the event (Note: no regular planetarium programs that day).\nThe full eclipse period extends from ~9:15am to noon with total annularity at 10:34am that lasts a little over 4 minutes.\nAt no time during this entire time period is it safe to look directly at the sun without protection.
