UNM’s Continuing Education department is offering a free InfoByte lecture on “Making Movie Magic with Maya” on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Autodesk Maya has become the industry standard software for 3D graphics. If you’re into computers and special effects, this lecture will give you a chance to see Maya at work. Multimedia developer and animator Laura Gutman will be there demonstrating how to build and animate a 3D character, from conception to finished movie scene. UNM Continuing Education is located at 1634 University NE. Visit their website at dce.unm.edu for more info.

Frank Films

Center (formerly and much more clearly known as the Santa Fe Center for Photography) and the Santa Fe Film Center (which, hopefully, will not be changing its name to “Center”) have announced the Robert Frank Film Festival, a screening of 12 Robert Frank films selected to highlight his extraordinary work and life. Frank’s films have not been distributed widely, and the opportunity to see so many at one time is a rare occurrence. The pioneering avant-garde filmmaker is probably best known as director of the infamous 1972 Rolling Stones documentary Cocksucker Blues (which, sadly, remains locked under a court order). The festival will provide a great overview of Frank’s work—both shorts and features—dating all the way back to 1959’s “Pull My Daisy” featuring Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. The film festival begins each day at 7 p.m.—Friday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 5—at Cinemacafé (1616 St. Michael’s Drive in Santa Fe). Tickets are $10 per day or $25 for the weekend. For a complete list of films and times, log on to www.visitcenter.org.

Public Spectacle

You bring it, they’ll screen it. Basement Films is proud to present The Return of Cinemus Publicus. This open-screen, open-projector event encourages cini/vidi artists to bring movies, digital videos, films, slides, film strips, home videos, works in progress, overhead transparencies—basically anything requiring projected light is fair game. If you’ve got something so obscure that it won’t play on 16mm, 8mm, DVD or VHS, bring your own deck and Basement Films will plug it in! The Return of Cinemus Publicus will take place Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8:30 p.m. In keeping with the DIY nature of Basement Films, the screening will take place in the Costume Salon’s garage (823 Gold SW). I have it on good authority there will be fans and refreshments. It’s free, free, free and open to the public, of course.
