Keira Knightley stars in this period biopic about controversial turn-of-the-century French novelist Colette. Initially pushed to publish novels under her husband's name, she eventually fought to make her own talents known. Naturally, this challenged gender norms at the time. Also, she slept with other women—which might have also challenged gender norms a bit. Unlike a lot of Knightley's work, this is no stuffy costume drama. It's an inspiring, funny and liberating glimpse at early female empowerment.111 minutes Unrated.
