First-time documentary director Tom Volf uses Maria Callas' own words (interviews, archival footage and her letters and diaries, read by French actress Fanny Ardant) to explain the famed opera diva's "tempestuous" life and career. The film is constructed by a fan for fans. Callas' viewpoint is unchallenged, and she was always notoriously tightlipped about her personal life (including her lifelong affair with Aristotle Onassis).
