Japanese miniaturist Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking, After Life, Nobody Knows) helms this alternately charming and heart-wrenching drama about a family of desperately poor small-time crooks who take in an abused young child they find lost outside in the cold. This slow-paced family drama (it is a Kore-eda, after all) is a fairly pointed criticism of modern Japanese societal values, but even outsiders can sympathize with this cast of big-hearted, hard-living characters. 121 minutes R.
