The Invisible Man

Universal Pictures has given up on its Marvel Cinematic Universe-inspired "Dark Universe" in which classic Universal Monsters join forces in heroic solidarity. (Tom Cruise's crappy take on The Mummy kinda killed that idea.) Instead, we're getting some re-imagined reboots. Here, Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men") stars as a terrified woman whose abusive, gaslighting ex-boyfriend (a scientist) commits suicide--only to show up at her house later, very much alive and invisible. Naturally, nobody believes her. Writer-director Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious) finds a clever hook on which to hang this revisionist take. It's no Universal Studios classic, but it's a interesting start. 124 minutes R.Century Rio
